There is no doubt that the internal combustion engine changed our society forever. What is not commonly understood is how politics, nepotism and bureaucracy has shaped its design and progress since its introduction.  It was the same for the electric vehicles when they became a viable alternative.

What if we told you that your catalytic converter was a product of this sideline of influence? That precious-metal filled capsule beneath your car that thieves can steal in a matter of minutes and recycle for hundreds of dollars in cash might not be the best, or most efficient way of addressing pollution caused by ICEs?

What if we told you that your hybrid ICE/EV could get up to 100 miles per gallon?

The key is EFFICIENCY, and this focus on eliminating impractical, or otherwise subpar, redundancies like the catalytic converter, will increase your HEV’s engine life while doubling or tripling your gas mileage.

We did the homework, and RetroProto is confident our ecomodded 2002 Honda Insight can prove our claims.

Once built, our HEV will compete in the Baja 1000 and other 24 hour races...obviously we consider cheating to be a close relative to efficiency ;)

Somewhere in the heart of Miracle Mile in Los Angeles, we at RetroProto are hacking away on our guinea pig HEV- pulling the drivetrain, yanking on the pigtails, and reengineering personal metropolitan transportation. (but if you’re familiar with our scope of work, you wouldn't be wrong imagining an HEV overlander with an unstoppable range!)
